The Letters of the Living were the first eighteen followers of the Bab who set out on their own searches for the Qa'im (one who was to bring righteousness to the world according to Shi'ih Islamic doctrine). Many of them began their searches after having a dream or vision of the Qa'im's existence.
- Mullá Husayn (Mulla Husayn-i-Bushrui) The first person to find the Bab and to whom the Bab declared his mission on May 22, 1844.
- Muhammad Hasan-i-Bushru'i
- Muhammad-Baqir-i-Bushru'i
- Mulla Aliy-i-Bastami
- Mulla Ali (Mulla Khuda-Bakhsh-i-Quchani) The first Babi martyr who died in prison in 1846.
- Mulla Hasan-i-Bajistani
- Siyyid Husayn-i-Yazdi
- Mirza Muhammad Rawdih-Khan-i-Yazdi
- Sa'id-i-Hindi Headed for India after meeting the Bab and was never heard from again.
- Mulla Mahmud-i-Khu'i
- Mulla Jalil-i-Urumi
- Mulla Ahmad-i-Ibdal-i-Maraghi
- Mulla Baqir-i-Tabrizi
- Mulla Yusuf-i-Ardibili
- Mirza Hadi
- Mirza Muhammad Aliyi-i-Qazvini
- Tahirih (Fatihmih Umm-Salamih) The only female Letter of the Living who caused an uproar at the Conference of Badasht by appearing without her veil as a symbolic gesture towards women's rights. This singular event led the Bab'is to realize that the Bab brought out about a new independent religion, and not just a continuance of Islam.
- Quddus (Haji Muhammad-Aliy-i-Barfurushi) Accompanied the Bab during his pilgrimage to Medina and Mecca. Martyred at the Siege of Fort Shakyh Tabarsi.
